Text

The ludological symposia see themselves as the prototype of a ludological debate and thus explore the possibility of a coherent ludology. This would be a game science that does not simply apply common methods and instruments from other disciplines to the phenomenon of games, but rather draws on the object of research itself. To this end, each session is dedicated to two objects; artefacts of play from which elementary operations are derived. Although such artefacts can fulfil different functions in different rule systems, they represent irreducible game activities in themselves. (FOR EXAMPLE: Dice must be thrown - regardless of whether the results are compared or it is indicated how many squares to advance. In any case, throwing is a primitive technique through which one participates in game culture or through which cultures are created in the development of game designs). The upcoming fifth Ludological Symposium will focus on two very central cultural techniques: - Veronika Kocher (librarian, data scientist and cultural scholar and game researcher) will talk about collecting as a classic game dynamic - be it collecting resources, points, opponent pieces or completing collections - but also collecting and classifying games themselves. - Nikola Supukovic (historian and digital game artist) discusses how tiling breaks with the analogue space, i.e. how the regularity of patterns marks the game space and thus offers a non-computer practice of digitisation. In the best case, the assembly of such cultural techniques results in a meaningful order, a periodic table of elements of the game and thus a coherent division of the research field. This time, 16 May, the ludological research commissions are meeting exceptionally in conference room 14 of Vordere Zollamtsstraße 7 (3rd floor)! We look forward to insightful discussions!
