Description

The workshop is dedicated to current developments, strategies and methods of preparing digital collections for presentation in digital space, exploring, researching or experimenting with them in different usage scenarios. From exploration to knowledge? Approaches and perspectives of digital collection visualizations With the advancing digitization of cultural assets and new technologies, interest in exploring objects and collections is growing beyond traditional search interfaces. Collection-holding institutions such as libraries, archives and museums are experimenting with new approaches, interactive visualizations and contextualizations in order to creatively present, communicate and research their collections. Knowledge and collection visualizations can enable multi-contextual views of objects and collections, from a close to a distant view. Such forms of representation offer new methods of reception, which have become the central basis of knowledge generation in the digital humanities, for example. However, this poses various challenges for GLAM institutions, starting with the type and quality of data required to enable certain visualizations, the dynamic developments around interface design, further curation and long-term accessibility or the envisaged cross-collection, semantic networking via linked open data. Conventions or best practices are only just emerging in the presentation and visualization of digital collections, as are epistemological reflections on infrastructures and visualizations. The workshop continues the Gotha Research Library's series of events on collection-related digital humanities and science communication formats. It is aimed at interested academics from the historically-oriented humanities and cultural studies, information and media studies, design disciplines and those working in the field or new to it from the library, archive or museum sectors. Main topics The workshop is dedicated to current developments, strategies and methods for preparing digital collections for presentation in digital space, exploring, researching or experimenting with them in different usage scenarios. I. The workshop will focus primarily on object- and collection-related visualizations for research contexts, but will also consider approaches in the context of digital cultural mediation. II. in addition, the focus will be on innovative strategies, concepts and projects of collection-holding institutions. III A third focus of the workshop is dedicated to collection visualizations from a research perspective and as an epistemological phenomenon. Requirements from individual academic disciplines with their respective research questions that are applied to digital collections and their visualizations will be discussed by way of example.
