Abstract

The present project, which was kindly supported by the Austrian Film Museum, deals with the area of conflict between anonymity and intimacy in anonymous amateur films and home movies. Taking a stock of twenty-five film reels, amateur film theory and theoretical approaches towards anonymity and intimacy into consideration, this area of conflict is being critically examined with the help of methods of artistic research. Moreover, the questions of whether the systematic study of amateur films (– in other words the revival and use of such films –) can be justified and legitimised and whether subjectively chosen films can be considered representative, are critically analysed. What is more, this paper attempts to generate a storyline using the existing films and thus to create a story about almost forgotten things. This approach reverses the typical relationship of written text and film. Instead of starting out from a screenplay and turning a written text into a film, the opposite approach is being chosen: films are used to narrate a story.
