The course examines the notions of research, knowledge and knowledge-making in the framework of artistic research.

The seminar introduces the discourse of agnotology or agnoepistemology and critically explores what is perceived as “knowledge” or “research” and what is “lack” or “inability” in the research context. Agnotology suggests that ignorance is often deliberately constructed through cultural, political, or social forces. Drawing on feminist and post-human approaches to agnoepistemology, the seminar aims to reconsider the limitations and negative connotations of ignorance, turning it into a site for critical inquiry and empowerment. It seeks to explore these implications through transcultural theory, diverse disciplinary perspectives, and practices.

By engaging with these idea within the context of artistic research discourse and reflecting on their own practices, PhD candidates are expected to challenge themselves to question the origins of their knowledge, methodologies, and vocabularies. The goal is to transcend conventional boundaries and cultivate and heightened sensitivity to the intersecting and plural values that inform their own artistic research. In addition to attending (minimum requirement 2/3 of the course), discussing and exchanging about the proposed topics, a short paper and conversation will be required.
