Beschreibung
Introduction to media theories is designed to provide a thorough exploration of media theory and the dynamics of mediatized environments, with the aim of critically assessing the influence of media narratives shaping daily social interactions. The course offers a thorough examination of the evolution of media theory and history, beginning with foundational concepts such as Plato’s allegory of the cave and extending to contemporary phenomena of digital cultures like internet memes. The first area of focus is media ecology, where participants will analyze the intricate interrelations between institutions, users, and technological assemblages. The second focus emphasizes critical perspectives, especially from posthumanism and feminist theory, while equipping students with the tools to acquire greater media literacy and critically examine power relations within media systems. Additionally, this year’s seminar will include guest lectures, who will provide specialized insights into their field of expertise.

Students are expected to participate actively in discussions and weekly text reviews. Students will be assigned three writing tasks (a film analysis, a media ecology + meme generation) throughout the semester and are expected to submit all of them in order to obtain a grade.

2 = completion of all three tasks + active participation
