From ancient philosophers to modern architects, the ideal city has always been a subject of fascination and debate, often envisioned as a harmonious blend of society and urban fabric. In his seminal work Utopia (1516), Thomas More presents a vision of an ideal city characterized by minimal top-down intervention. He suggests that the city thrives best with few laws, relying on the judgment and mutual responsibility of its residents: “They have but few laws and such is their constitution, they require not many.” This notion of minimal regulation contrasts strongly with today’s urban planning practices. Today, cities often employ extensive regulatory frameworks designed to manage perceived chaos and enhance functionality. These regulations aim to create well-ordered and livable environments, however, frequently overlook the inherent complex and dynamic nature of urban life.
What does the ideal city look like from the perspective of a Social Designer?
What really makes a city? What is the essence of urbanity? How can “good” co-existence in the city be achieved? How can rules and regulations be balanced with concepts like (radical) openness, ambiguity, and indeterminacy? What potential lies in uncertainties and conflicts, and what role does trust play? And above all: Where should Social Designers direct their focus? What dreams and wild aspirations drive their visions? (How) can Social Designers help balance regulation with the natural fluidity of urban life by fostering opportunities for transformation and civic engagement?
Case Study: Vienna
In this seminar, Vienna and its urban life will serve as our case study. Known for its regulatory rigor and paternalistic approach towards its residents, which leaves little room for spontaneous or informal urban development, Vienna offers a good example to discuss these issues and explore alternative approaches towards a more open, informal, chaotic, and dynamic urban environment.
Through critical readings, group discussions, and urban explorations, we aim to understand how dreams can catalyze social change. Key figures, positions and projects in the field of Social Design will be introduced to enrich our discourse and provide deeper insights.
Requirements are regular attendance (at least 80%), preparatory readings and presentation of texts, active participation, as well as contribution to the final output (further details in the first session).
A copy of texts will be provided in the first session.
