Abstract

Material game culture has received little scholarly attention to date, possibly due to the lack of digitally accessible collection holdings. As part of a dissertation project at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, a concept for a cross-institutional open access research platform for game objects that meets scholarly standards will be developed using the example of the board game. Play and play objects are inseparable. Play as an action, however, can neither be archived nor exhibited. An approach in a data infrastructure can only take place via a precise contextualization of the game objects. In order to map these, a suitable controlled vocabulary in the form of thesauri must be developed, which do justice to the objects that have been stripped of their function in a collection, have been handed down historically, and are sometimes ideologically charged. The impetus for the study came from the examination of games and toys, the virtual depot of the Nuremberg Toy Museum, founded in 1994, and five other similar collections in the German-speaking world. This digital collection infrastructure is to be technically renewed and made accessible in terms of content. It has therefore become necessary to rethink structures and contents. In my paper, I present research on the context of board games based on an analysis of existing digital infrastructures for the recognition of material game culture as well as a concrete object. From these, keywords can be derived that correspond to the "FAIR & CARE" principles and are suitable for subject indexing, data modeling, and classifications. Thereby, these vocabularies should be discussed in the communities and created as Open Standard as well as in the common standards file or supplemented and linked. The article is based on the presentation from the workshop of the Department of Collections and Museums of the Department of Collections and Museums of the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg from 13 - 15 October 2021.
