About the lecture and its objective: This panel explores memes and its intimate connection to politics. Using interdisciplinary lenses, we interrogate the functions, places, and meanings of memes, looking at how and why memes have become a central online communication, propagandizing and recruitment tools for people across the political spectrum. We also explore the production of realities, like those of echo chambers and the destroying of grand narratives, by which memes are an integral part of. Further, ethical aspects of memes in politics are also raised; does memeification/memefying belong in politics? What is the implication for our democracy? Participants will be able to reflect on memes and their roles in the digital sphere that serve as political tools. Speakers: Sophie Publig - a Senior Scientist and digital ecosystem explorer, Weibel Institute for Digital Cultures, University of Applied Arts Vienna. facilitator: Keerati Chenpitayaton - a professor and researcher in sociology, Chulalongkorn University. Sakda - undergraduate at Chulalongkorn
