The Remediation of „Nation“ (B. Haberpeuntner)
Text
This project seeks to advance our understanding of the fundamental interdependence between media and ‘nation,’ by interrogating the actuality of nationhood as a still prevalent principle of organizing collective belonging, in spite of our embeddedness in globalized and decentralized media environments. In order to do so, a historical comparative perspective is derived from the as of yet sorely neglected contact zones between Nationalism Studies and Medienkulturwissenschaft, looking at nationhood as an ever-changing dispositif that shifts and transforms as its mediality shifts and transforms—a mutually transformative dynamics that is grasped and analyzed as remediation. In addition, it is argued that this remediation of ‘nation’ always occurs in relation with, and delimitation from, other forms of collective organization such as, most recently, that of a globalized world.
