When Commons Become the Seeds

“when commons become the seeds” reflects on the history of the commons and convivial tools and technologies. The lecture performance was presented at Zemljani / Earthlings at Šumski univerzitet / Forest University in July 2025 and incorporated embodied and sonic practices, theoretical inquiry, and site-specific experimentation. A prelude, led by Andrea Lumplecker comprised movement, listening, and sensing exercises. We dedicated ourselves to expanded listening and walking to help participants become enmeshed with the forest ecology and sonority. The second part comprised a live audio performance combining sonic exploration with theoretical discourse. Working with Florian Puschmann, who began his musical journey in the early 1990s and has recently evolved to create sonic ambient journeys for restoration, regeneration, and healing, we prepared an audio mixtape specifically conceived alongside the gathering, its site, and the script. Additionally, two microphones were used: one to capture place-based sounds from within the forest, and the other to enable a live reading of a text collage combining theoretical perspectives on the commons and convivial living and technologies. This approach to theory offers unconventional methods of bridging the gap between academia and affective, spiritual, and embodied knowledge, encompassing diverse sensing, soundings, and listening positions through more speculative research.
