The Department of Building Construction at IoA organized an open workshop for the INTRA research project ROOTARCH. The workshop took place in-person in the Biodesign Lab (VZA Room 030) on March 24th and 25th. On Monday March 24th from 10:00 to 12:30 we introduced the research and project goals and embark on an open discussion. We invited several colleagues from other departments (Geometry, Ceramics, Science Visualizations...) to take part in this event, and welcome your interest and commitment. ROOTARCH aims to translate the growth principles of plant roots into new solutions for architectural design by developing digital design and production methodologies. The project takes on a bio-inspired approach, looking at biological processes as a foundation for innovation in design. The research builds upon the tradition of arts-based research projects such as Biornametics, GrAB – Growing as Building, and BIOCOOL, previously carried out at the University of Applied Arts. ROOTARCH is a one-year research project led by Petra Gruber and funded by the INTRA program of the University of Applied Arts Vienna. The workshop was part of the development of the ROOTARCH research project, which also featured guest lectures. It fostered discussions on the application of biological principles to architectural systems. Additionally, two subsequent workshops followed, further expanding on the research and its implications.
