Description

The seminar will present examples of ruins and wastelands in digital games. Why are game designers obsessed with ruination and post-apocalyptic landscapes? How do games like “S.T.A.L.K.E.R.”, “Far Cry” or “Fallout” represent demolished buildings? What is the affective impact of wastelands? Can we analyse demolition and post-apocalypse as a terrain of “(Non-)Places and ‘Any-Space-Whatevers’” (Souvik Mukherjee 2019, referring to Deleuze)? How do recent media coverages about war zones add to the imaginative power of fictious ruins?
