Beschreibung

The first open source professional cinema camera is being developed within the Art & Science department as part of an EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation project. The Apertus AXIOM project draws on the strengths of Art & Science by adopting an inter- and transdisciplinary approach that brings together a range of expert cultures, including artists, engineers, programmers and scientific researchers. AXIOM introduces the first professional, extendable and modular cinema camera platform entirely based on Free Software, Open Design and Open Hardware. Developed by the community-driven and award winning apertus° association, this project is operating with transparent development processes and extensive documentation. AXIOM is a project of ground-breaking nature. It is a best-practice-example with a very high potential to disrupt the creative industries in the imaging and video sectors. By applying principles of FLOSS (Free/Libre and Open Source Software) and extending them to the whole design, production and software, it aims to free film makers of the artificial limitations introduced through the “closed” products being available on the market. The technology for today's professional cinema and film production landscape will be freely adaptable, just as the generated knowledge are made freely available. The AXIOM product line is the result of the ongoing endeavor to redefine the industry well beyond the DIY garages and hobbyist labs the project started in: to build the very first open digital cinema camera from scratch and to create a platform for film-makers, creative industry professionals, artists and enthusiasts. AXIOM is not just a product, but rather a toolkit, a knowledge library and an ecosystem advocating freedom, that will adapt over time, evolving for many years to come. The ecosystem allows for development and innovation beyond cinematographic applications. The open nature of the AXIOM invites contributions and services from other industrial sectors. These will be able to enhance the capabilities of the same digital imaging platform. As such, people who might have never previously come into contact with one another will have a greater potential to network and foster synergy.
