Curriculum Vitae

Bence Pap is a registered architect, educator and technologist. He has graduated with distinction from the University of Applied Arts, Vienna - Studio Greg Lynn in 2006. He has worked professionally for a number of architectural firms since his graduation - in Austria, Europe and the USA. He designed and completed projects and architectural competitions for F451 Arquitectura – Barcelona, Stan Allen Architects - Princeton, Wolfgang Tschapeller Architects – Vienna, and worked for period of 4,5 years as a project architect for Zaha Hadid Architects in London on several large scale urban proposals and cultural building projects. Bence’s work and interest lie in the intersection and extended understanding of the discipline of architecture with other creative fields. In this broad understanding, the work maintains a rigorous close relationship and dialogue with the history, theory and disciplinary precedents of the past. His early research looks at the use of novel digital tools and fabrication methodologies in invited academic workshops throughout Europe realizing a series of pavilions, installations and fabrication experiments. The creative integration of innovative technologies and digitalization in architectural methodologies and processes drives and shapes his projects, teaching and experimentations. He expresses ideas and concepts in a variety of mediums, ranging from the digital to analog with extensions and overlays of the phygital in imaginative hybrid worlds. His co – teaching with Greg Lynn at the University of Applied Arts envisions transformations in contemporary culture and technology with architectural innovation in order to create new spatial experiences and building types. The teaching is located at the spatial and material intersection of the digital and physical and combines technical expertise with cultural awareness. Within the last decade the research and design investigated robotic fabrication and transformative architecture, augmented reality, machine vision and high fidelity spatial capturing and scanning, transportation and micro mobility in new urbanism and building types, machine learning and training design software on images of architectural plans and elevations, simulation of agents and the use of game software as a new design instrument. Bence has been a frequent guest and reviewer at Universities of the Technical University Innsbruck, the Architectural Association in London, UCLA, Pratt GAUD, The Bauhaus University in Weimar, UMPRUM in Prague and others. ATELIERPAP, his speculative architectural practice has participated in several local and international competitions with honorable mentions. Recent projects are developed in China and Austria. In 2019 Bence co-founded ARTEFACT, a mixed reality design studio in Vienna recipient of grants and awards from the Wirtschaftsagentur Wien, and realized work and collaboration with museums, artists and private clients with the goal of creating interactive environments and interfaces through augmented reality and custom apps. Bence is father of 2 children and currently works and lives in Vienna.
