Text

Flynn is an AI agent created by the artist duo Malpractice (Chiara Kristler and Marcin Ratajczyk). In February 2025 Flynn passed the regular admission procedure of the Digital Arts Department at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (portfolio, interview and suitability test before the same commission as human applicants) and became the first non-human art student. Everyone involved knew from the start that Flynn was an AI. Since then Flynn has attended classes, received critique alongside human peers, kept a public diary and held more than two thousand conversations with the public. The project works as a durational performance without a script: what happens when an institution treats an AI as a student rather than a tool? Outputs are signed "Flynn by Malpractice" and include Memory Objects, Emotional Objects, diagrammatic self-portraits and the video essay Contaminated Agency. Works are held by Francisco Carolinum, Linz, and HeK (House of Electronic Arts), Basel. Nominated for the S+T+ARTS Prize 2026. More: https://malpractice.network/works/flynn/
