Text

The debate about a “Bauwende” (encompassing shift of construction practices) has gained momentum in recent years. In the context of the climate crisis, we can no longer afford both the sealing of new land and the demolition of existing building stock. This necessitates a shift in architecture and planning towards "Care and Repair" practices (AzW, 2017), an "care for the existing" approach („Sorge um den Bestand“ Bund dt. Architekt:innen, 2022), and the development of a "new culture of retrofitting" („Neue Umbaukultur“, Bundesstiftung Baukultur Deutschland, 2022/2023). Nevertheless, our existing buildings and infrastructures are inherently embedded within a nonsustainable framework. Thus, they necessitate not only preservation but also transformation. Such transformation entails physical alterations alongside changes in use and everyday practices, rendering various social, ecological and cultural considerations relevant. This complex and delicate endeavour can only succeed with the involvement of those who use and care for them, requiring new approaches to development and planning. Especially "Phase 0" (before the actual planning of a building) and "Phase 10" (after the use of a building), must become essential components of architectural development and urban planning practice. By opening up new imaginations and develop innovative methods, art can play a crucial role to envisage future pathways beyond technocratic planning or overly simplistic participation schemes. Therefore art should become an integrated part of this transformation process.
