Text
The ever expanding boundaries of human knowledge fuel discussions about objectivity and subjectivity in visualizations. The talk aims to introduce practical examples from the Science Visualization Lab at the University of Applied Arts and spark discussions. Historically rooted in science communication through documentary films, the lab has recently expanded its creative field to engage recipients even more directly. In recent years, we have broken down the metaphorical "fourth wall". A wider range of artistic strategies was introduced to present important and universally significant topics for humanity. With these strategies the lab tries to bring the world of science closer to various audiences. These visual and other sensory translations of scientific data open art and science debates about how didactic, subjective, or objective the nature of art-sci presentations should be. The unfolding discussion about the context in which scientific data is presented to audiences is indispensable for the research and development in the field. The documentary background and body of work of the lab will frame the talk and present examples to reflect on representations, presentations and translations of humanity‘s scientific state of knowledge.
