Text
In this course we will approach the very difficult task of drawing the world. We will collect material about our own movement in the world and analyze existing artistic approaches to making world maps. We may get trapped in abstraction and the many worlds behind each representation. We will find conflicts in the narration of our own history. We will appropriate the imagery of the past, chart the present and find our paths through these entanglements, create an Atlas of Hope. * The course title is based on the following article: Signs of Struggle, Songs of Sorrow: Notes on the Politics of Uncertainty in the Films of John Akomfrah Author(s): Stoffel Debuysere Source: Black Camera , Vol. 6, No. 2 (Spring 2015), pp. 61-78 Published by: Indiana University Press Stable URL: https://www.jstor.org/stable/10.2979/blackcamera.6.2.61 The following radio show by Nabihah Iqbal was a great inspiration for this course: https://www.nts.live/shows/nabihah-iqbal/episodes/nabihah-iqbal-thursday-4th-june
