Cultural Heritage Preservation and Conservation in Nepal after the Earthquake

The joint project of the Institute of Conservation of the University of Applied Arts Vienna together with its long-term partner, the Kathmandu Valley Preservation Trust (KVPT), and other local partners contributes to the preservation of Nepal‘s devastated cultural heritage after the earthquake 2015. The project is funded by the Austrian Development Agency, the Federal Chancellery (BKA) and the Austrian Foreign Ministry (BMEIA). Focus lies on cultural sites in the Kathmandu Valley, which were originally restored and conserved with support from Austria. The main aims are first-aid and stabilisation measures and the renovation and restoration of the Patan Museum and the Garden of Dreams - sites which attracted more than 70,000 national and international visitors last year. Furthermore selected monuments and the Patan Durbar Square, including stone and metal sculptures and statues, and decorative elements of the Patan Royal Palace will undergo conservation treatments. Traditional building techniques and preferably recycled building materials will be used and adapted to resist earthquakes while simultaneously original design intentions and authentic compositions are respected.
