Exuvia
Text
The title of the work derives from biology, where exuviae are the remains of an external skeleton of ecdysozoa, those animal that shed skin. Inspired by this phenomenon in nature, I expanded it and applied on personal associations with the goal to generate a new visual work exploring the meaning of sacredness. As a witness of the absence of the anthropomorphic body, its presence remains in form of a fragile shell and transcends into a sacred state, gaining independence in space. In a poetic way, the work draws on the theme of resurrection, the passing from one state to another. The shape, which appears sovereign and supportive in structure, was deliberately chosen, transferring power yet conveying vulnerability at the same time. This work believes in the immortality of objects in a sense of constant re-contextualisation, taking on different forms. The omentum of a lamb, often seen as a slaughterhouse waste, the organic material used here, gains a new significance within this work and thus a new life. I use it to quote the Christian religion, where “Agnus Dei” is an analogy symbol for the sacrifice through the substitutionary death of Jesus and where objects or body remnants of saints become venerations. The presented work correlates with the symbolic meaning and thus becomes a relic itself.
