Drawing on Henri Lefèbvre’s claim for urban participation, heterogeneous protest movements emerged within the last years – from sex workers in Madrid, who refuse to accept eviction from their quarter, to artists in Hamburg, thwarting investors’ plans by squatting the “Gängeviertel”. The Right to the City-claim resonates strongly with different art movements, which embrace the concept of urban performance: Allan Kaprow’s Happenings, Günter Brus’ Vienna Walk, and VALIE EXPORT’s body configurations are just some historical iconic examples. The last years have seen a vital contribution of artistic interventions to contemporary protest movements. Erdem Gunduz’ Standing Man for example became the icon for protesters within Istanbul’s Gezi Park-uprising and an urban performance that thrived on the World Wide Web and in Social Media.
