A short video essay either projected or shown on screen. The film work positions itself as a form of cinema attuned to the subtle interactions between light and shadow, plants and insects, wind, water, and weather. It explores how these often barely perceptible forces of living and dying can be made visible, audible, and experientially accessible through film. Through the use of macro lenses, a contemplative study emerges—one that examines the vibrating relations between materials and forces at a specific site, observed and recorded with a concrete–abstract level of detail. The extreme close-up perspective intensifies the atmosphere of the place and its more-than-human agencies, interwoven with field recordings and voice-overs of an inner monologue by Nikolaus Gansterer.
Description
I worked on this series of (meta-)reflections for several months sifting through the rushes, editing and rearranging the collected audio- and video notations. CAPE WOOLAMAI – Sensing Contingent Agencies was filmed between 2019 and 2022 in the State Nature Reserve at Cape Woolamai on Phillip Island, Australia. All film and sound material originates exclusively from this location. At its core, the project is dedicated to tracing those more-than-human forces (agencies) that generate atmospheres on both micro and macro scales and shape the dynamics within this sensitive ecosystem. “Woolamai” derives from an Indigenous word for snapper fish—its headland once seen as resembling a snapper’s head. Created on Millowl (Phillip Island), Bunurong Country, the film honours the Traditional Owners and their Elders, past, present, and emerging.
