Text

The subject-matter of the thesis are selected works of the contemporary French artist Sophie Calle. Five works of art are described and explained in more detail in order to analyse them in the context of aesthetics and media theory as well as in a psychoanalytic and sociological context. There is a special focus on investigating the performative character of Calles's works as well as analogies to the artistic practice of search for traces. Furthermore, view and self-staging are matters of special relevance, as they permeate Calle's oeuvre as a leitmotif. What is also under consideration is the gender specific aspect of the view. The subject of the view as the active part confronts the object of the view, and is generated only by the view of its counterpart. Her works of art show Calle as a vehement and subtle observer of the private and the intimate presenting concealed spheres relentlessly to the public. Thus her aesthetic practice is characterized by meticulously precise field studies by which she searches and collects traces and relicts to process them in her works of art. In their inter-mediality and hybridity many works unite the aspects described above. Extrinsic stories provide the stage on which the artist constructs and puts into effect her own identities.
