Text

‘Ecopedagogies from the Intertidal Zone’ introduces practices from various disciplinary fields dealing with ecological education, conservation and community resilience in the intertidal zone, investigating the creative space of collaborative action between the arts, the environmental humanities and science in marine conservation. Focusing on success stories and experimental methodologies this session expands on methods of ecological literacy which cross the spaces of land and sea, thinking through the potential of the intertidal zone as an ecotone. This space where various communities meet, is a critical zone of intervention where various forms of existence and research cohabitate, and as such it is an epistemic junction where a plurality of practices are necessary, in order to reveal the in-depth intricacies of the environmental processes that define these habitats. Highlighting the role of estuarine spaces and wetlands for carbon sinking and habitat regulation, this session will take in consideration what collaborative ecopedagogical efforts should be made to follow the guidelines proposed by the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030. In doing so it will create a space of debate about the politics of practices developed on the intersection of land and sea, challenging modes of action that include citizen science and artistic research as means for ecological insight and political activation.
