This course explores the contradictory intersection of computing and sustainability and how technology can be aligned with ecological and social resilience. Students gain hands-on insights into two research projects of the Science Visualization Lab: GreenGLAM (an FFG-funded project on using AI to gather information and promote sustainability in cultural institutions) and ARTverse (an open-source project to promote art and education in virtual environments). Other key topics in the course include: Sustainability in Computer Graphics (PIXELvienna Panel), Hacker Ethics & Environmental Activism (e.g., communities like Bits&Bäume), Permacomputing & Cultural Ecology (climate activism in the arts), Critical Perspectives on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (rethinking digital sustainability), Resilient Digital and Analog Systems (semester topic: survivalism), Creative and Frugal Digital Art (e.g., the demoscene) and Symbiotic Earth & Biomes (rethinking the relationship between technology and nature, carbon sinks, …).
