SLS at SAR 2025

Description

At SAR 2025, SENSING LIVING SYSTEMS contributed in two different formats: the Poster Session and the Special Interest Group session TURNS + RETURNS. In the Poster Session, the team presented an adapted poster version of CONCEPTION OF SYS – The Smell of a Mythological Being from the Series of Scenographic Studies. Visitors were invited to respond to the prompt “Imagine a being that knows and feels everything about connectedness and interactions. What would it smell like?” by smelling six curated scents, voting via paper ballot, and adding written associations. The intervention generated high engagement and opened many conversations about how olfactory experience can shift attention away from purely cognitive processing and towards sensory, imaginative forms of meaning-making. In TURNS + RETURNS, Jeanette Müller and Paul Divjak participated as presenters within the SIG Co-Agency: Artistic Research as Transformative Practice. The session was designed as a performative and dialogical encounter exploring co-agency through practices grounded in ecological sensitivity, material thinking, and contextual responsiveness, with a focus on “turns” and “returns” as modes of resonance and effect. Participants were explicitly invited to join the improvisation by bringing an element of their own practice - sound, word, object, or scent - as an interface for collective reflection and exchange.
