text

Cinema³ is about developing alternative strategies for screening films, moving towards a more spatial movie experience and away from the classic typology of a single screen with a seated audience. A wooden structure, supporting a continuous soft surface, Cinema3 fluidly displays a short prototype film in images from three projectors. The softness and translucency of the structure constitute an interactive interface that enables the viewer to engage interpersonally as well as haptically. Visitors can immerse physically into the soft architectural envelope and have a seat. Image and usable surface merge into one. As the characters move through the Los Angeles cityscape, they shift screens within the continuous loop of the textile structure, shaping a physical 3-D space. The audience also moves about, tracing various narrative paths and overlapping the movements of the fictional characters. The film is a promotional trailer that reveals the potential of the physical prototype as a cinematic instrument. After the first show in the front yard of the Schindler House, Cinema3 can travel to be reassembled in different urban and interior contexts and be activated by various other contents played on it. The continuative idea is a mobile cinematic laboratory for spatial narratives.
