Contingent Agencies : Notating Agencies and Atmospheres Workshop and Launch of Publication Contingent Agencies is a new publication by Alex Arteaga and Nikolaus Gansterer, emerging from a long-term artistic research project that explores how human and non-human agencies condition the emergence of atmospheres. The project combines cross-disciplinary practices of notation, reflection, showing, and sharing—across media such as text, drawing, sound, and video—within frameworks like phenomenology, enactivism, and new materialism. Contributions from renowned international authors trace the formation of atmospheres through perspectives from art, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and quantum physics. In dialogue with Alexander Damianisch, expert in artistic research, central aspects of artistic research are discussed and contextualized. The book, together with an extensive online archive, invites readers to engage with the material and immaterial conditions of sense-making within ephemeral environments. Building on this research, the one-day workshop “Notating Agencies and Atmospheres” with Nikolaus Gansterer introduces participants to situative notation—methods for translating perception and thought into embodied, material forms. The workshop poses a central question: How do atmospheres—those subtle, impermanent, non-objectified yet affective presences—come into being, and how can we attune to them? Working within the environment of Casa degli Artisti in Milan and in resonance with the Geranos Project by Riccardo Arena, participants will explore how both the visible and invisible, the tangible and the ephemeral, can be expressed through diverse diagrammatic and performative practices. Gansterer invites participants to attend to transitions and contingencies within artistic processes and to experiment with ways of sharing the ineffable—the materiality of sense-making itself.
