Abstract

Our contribution to the ELIA conference will give a practical introduction to the core course of the Cross-Disciplinary Strategies Department (CDS, launched 2017): the Cross-Disciplinary Capabilities Lab (CDCLab). After giving an overview over its development, we will give a workshop re-creating one particular method! With it, we aim to bring in a concrete proposal for cross-disciplinary practices TO MOVE and KEEP MOVING. CDCLab is the place where the main learning goals of CDS, as outlined in the curriculum, are expected to be met. Students should learn to relate themselves and their practices in different ways and on various layers. Over the past years it has been developed as a safe space for experimentation through a cross-generational theoretical and practical exchange. Following a yearly theme, students work independently on a single project both in written and applied form. They are supported through the organization of various workshops and guest lectures in various disciplines, as well as close supervision from CDS faculty members. Overarching guiding questions are as follows: How do disciplines relate to other disciplines? discourses to artworks? methods across disciplines? How to reach various audiences? peers? With this contribution, we want to open a conversation on the balance between structure and fluidity when creating a space where students, whether individually or in groups, are encouraged and supported in developing an independent, cross-disciplinary practice that draws on scientific and artistic research and uses various media and forms of expression. We will create a space that allows and demands for experimenting with a variety of approaches to situations, questions, problems and expression. By doing so, participants will learn how different disciplines approach a topic or problem differently without attributing any discipline an a priori superiority. This workshop will illustrate how in many interdisciplinary ways of working there is no “right” answer to a question.
