Text

‘Exit through the gift shop’ is most museums’ mantra, and thus icons from art history adorn mugs and bags for mass consumption. As part of Vienna Design Week, the University of Applied Arts counters this trend with its own motto: ‘Entry through the Werkshop to the practice of art and design’. As part of Vienna Design Week 2023 Angewandte Interdisciplinary Lab (AIL) and ARTist, the alumni association of the University of Applied Arts, put up for sale a selection of works and Supersachen (awesome things) by former students. AIL with its Café Exchange is a place of exchange in both a literal and figurative sense: Located in the main banking hall of the former Postsparkasse, where foreign exchange and cash transactions once took place, interdisciplinary practices now occupy the space and open up the university and its diverse research fields to the public. The leading questions are: What do former students work on these days? What ‘treasure’ do you want to take with you? Which Angewandte souvenir could you pick? Where do special editions, unique items, test products and side projects end up? Which works of art are in search of a new home and might be the cornerstones of a new and singular art and design collection? This ‘Werkshop’ acts as a blueprint for similar future editions that will take place on a regular basis and might become an integral part of the University of Applied Arts. Program: Showcase Only and Opening: 28 Sep, 18:00 Shop Opening Hours: 29 & 30 Sep, 10:00–18:00 (Café Exchange will be open too) With contributions by: Georg Adam, Zeynep Aksöz und Mark Balzar, Sonja Bischur, Laura Dominici, Lara Erel, Bernhard Faiss, Juliane Fink, Max Freund, Jakob Glasner, Simone Göstl (sicago), Martin Grödl & Moritz Resl (Process Studio), Theresa Hattinger, Anna Holly (hollyaroh), Norma Kiskan, Matthias Krinzinger, Daniela Kröhnert (DARK), Ivana Lazić, Julia Neckel, Silvia Pachler, Wolfgang M. Its main focus is on providing support in matters of communication with the university, enabling the exchange of ideas, connecting former students, promoting artistic and academic university projects and documenting the artistic and academic developments of former students. About Vienna Design Week: VIENNA DESIGN WEEK is Austria’s most important multidisciplinary and curated design festival. Beyond the preoccupation with the design of products, it poses the question of what role the work of designers* plays for coexistence in the city and worldwide. Since 2007, VIENNA DESIGN WEEK has been a defining part of Vienna's design landscape. Organized by an independent association, the festival comprises around 200 events and welcomes 40,000 visitors each year.
