what do internet memes have to do with climate change? we will discuss dilemma rhetorics and the media language of memes, their relation to the field of biology, digital consumption, and whether memes can be tactically used to raise awareness for environmental issues 🌍 The Dilemma Salon is an interactive dialog format of the Klima Biennale Wien. In this format, guests discuss a dilemma together and try to get to the heart of the issue. The Dilemma Salon is not about giving answers alone, but rather about exploring questions and the context around them. We actively encourage our guests to contribute their personal perspectives and expand the discussion together with the audience. This event will take place in English. Cem A. is an artist with a background in anthropology. He is known for running the art meme page @freeze_magazine and for his site-specific installations. His work explores topics such as survival and alienation in the art world, often through a hyper-reflexive lens and collaborative projects. Cem A.’s selected solo exhibitions and installations include Louisiana Museum, Barbican Centre, Berlinische Galerie, and Museum Wiesbaden. His group exhibitions include documenta fifteen, Istanbul Modern, Mudam Luxembourg and Museum of Contemporary Art Skopje. He has held lectures at Royal College of Art London, Central Saint Martins, HEAD Geneva, HDK Valand and Universität der Künste Berlin. Sophie Publig is a Senior Scientist and digital ecosystem explorer, navigating the intricate webs of the online realm from her base at the Peter Weibel Institute for Digital Cultures, University of Applied Arts Vienna. She has been actively engaged in independent research in the fields of media theory, critical posthumanism, post-apocalyptic narratives, and contemporary art and is determined to unearth the symbiotic relations between technology, culture, and the environment. Her doctoral thesis from 2023, The Sympoietic Life of Internet Memes explores the dynamics of internet memes and digital cultures. With a focus on planetarity and the interconnections between living and non-living beings, Sophie approaches media discourse from an eco-digital perspective.
