Description
The malleable body is our interface with the world. In our current context, we're confronted with a hybridization of digital and physical spheres, a profound situation that raises questions as to the ways in which we identify and create, stage and manipulate identities and bodily representation both digitally mediated and physically altered. Bodies and experience of being is shaped in that space in between as it is performed in increasingly fluid and hybridized forms. Emphasizing the embeddedness of aestheticized mediation, modes of performing and self-reflection in a space wherein bodily sensation and presence as well as its aesthetic plasticity is particularly accentuated, the exhibition blends itself with the space and daily work of beauty experts – embedding itself in much the same way as the spheres and media it investigates. In practice, the exhibition is shown at the beauty salon Clinique Camille in central Copenhagen – an unorthodox choice of space, perhaps, but one that underlines the conceptual basis of works, artists and academic enquiry in a strong yet quite tangible manner and furthering the affective context of the artworks. The artworks are inserted into the space in such a way as to commingle with the rooms, objects and activities of the space, creating a sense of normalcy rather than disruption, in an attempt to not only let the artworks deal with topics of hybridization and bodily malleability, but to also delve into this problematic in a curatorial sense.
