Abstract
The 2020 research project at the University of Applied Arts Vienna referenced in the article deals with the development of a digital research infrastructure for board and parlor games that documents games in their cultural significance. In order to present games in their context and how they function and to provide indicators of cultural references, professional interdependencies and innovative potential, as well as to enable a chronological classification in relation to historical events, it is essential to start with how they function. “Play research” today focuses less on the question of what play is and how it can be defined, and more on play as a process, vehicle and apparatus for depicting and generating knowledge about cultural spaces. Since the act of playing, similar to dance or performance, can neither be cataloged nor exhibited, the focus of my work in this article is on a methodological cultural and media studies approach to the process of play, a documentation of the dynamics in board and parlour games Following Flusser's concept of apparatus, I understand board games as symbol-processing, programmed media in which players as functionaries generate meanings within a black box. This is linked to the structure of an open digital archiving practice for a community of interested parties and experts, which is not limited to games.
