text

Socrates once compared his method of asking questions to the practice of a midwife. Through the guiding act of questioning, the philosopher can help another bring forth an idea. In this episode, Cordula and Charlotta introduce a new dialogic technique called: talking with each other apart (Miteinander vorbeireden). Cordula asks Charlotta as if she were a midwife. Charlotta answers from her realm, the realm of art and pedagogy. As they talk about gestating children and gestating art, their exchange becomes a struggle of translation: each must turn the other’s words into metaphor in order to understand. A premiere is cancelled. A caesarean has to be performed. From time to time the voice of a real midwife, Anja, appears. Can Anja help them rework the bloody mind-body dualism and fight back against Socrates from the future? How are pain and knowledge connected? New creatures lurk in the slips and mistakes.
