Text
Le Bouc Divin is a cross-reading of Jannis Skarimbas' novel The Divine Goat (1933) and the bizarre biotope behind WIELS' premises. The Dionysian character of the book, a pervert, a seducer, or simply a bearer of life, Skarimbas' anti-hero becomes a vehicle for many sociological and political parallelisms. Eugenics, totalitarianism, bio-politics and the eternally enigmatic nature of human relationships all fall under the scope of the text. Due to the fact that the book has never been translated into English, artist Yiannis Papadopoulos shared the story aurally with his fellow residents, and through his selective translation they read and misread the novel, offering back a gesture to the WIELS Project Room as a joint act, where individual practices mingle and ask uncomfortable questions. With contributions by Hiba Farhat, Nikolaus Gansterer, Oier Iruretagoiena , Marlie Mul, Yiannis Papadopoulos, Markus von Platen, Jaanus Samma, Ula Sickle. Performative opening on the 5h of December, 18:00.
