I stand on the bridge linking the mainland to Phillip Island. The tide drives the water forward, a strong current beneath me. Waves ripple in the wind—what forces are at work here? Everything is bathed in rosy evening light. I feel as if I’m standing on a ship, drifting out toward the open sea.
