Text

How can subjective experiences of war and genocide be audio-visually represented? One approach to this challenge is the animated documentary. This thesis specifically explores the question how and to what effect puppets and figurines are an apt medium in this context. For this purpose, two examples were analysed and compared: The Great War (2001) by the Dutch puppet theatre group Hotel Modern and L’Image Manquante (2013) by the Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh. The Great War is based on letters a French soldier wrote to his mother from the trenches of the Western Front in World War I. Hotel Modern illustrates excerpts of the letters literally as well as associatively by using miniature sets and puppets to create ‘live animation’ on stage, which is filmed and projected onto a screen in real time. In the film L’Image Manquante, Rithy Panh portrays his personal memories as a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide and reflects on the challenges of depiction. For this multi-layered approach he uses clay figurines and elaborate dioramas in combination with live action footage, partly from propaganda films. Through employing an overtly artificial medium, the artists demonstrate that their aim is not an objective documentation of events. Since puppets are not read as literally as documentary live action footage they allow the artistic freedom for depicting subjective perception and mental images. The combination of elements that evoke proximity and immersion, with those that create distance and transparency creates space for empathy as well as intellectual reflection.
