Text

This lecture theorizes memes as sympoietic beings inhabitating social media platforms, remediating life through users and the logics of remix culture, creating new organisms undergoing evolution online. In this regard, I am challenging the assumption that what has been deemed 'brain rot' is not just silly jokes but bear the trademarks of a myriad of user customs, platform logics, cultural references, and media-specific constraints. In the example of the O I I A cat meme, its emergence can be traced across the platforms of Instagram, TikTok, Twitter, and Bilibili, various image macro templates, and an evolution of sped-up audios.
