CONVOCATION III is a gathering for language-based artistic researchers focused on the sharing of practices. It is not a public event, rather it has been planned as a peer-to-peer exchange. Conceived as a space for conversation between contributors, its core focus is the sharing of practices through a range of formats. Convocation — from com ‘with, together’ and vocare ‘to call’ — brings together artistic researchers whose work engages with the materiality and mediality of language: from body language to digital text, from spoken utterance to words on a page. It is conceived as a space for exchange between an international community of researchers working across visual arts, performance, film, theatre, music, choreography, and literature. The intent is not to define language-based artistic research, but to reflect how it is practised in its diversity. The focus of Convocation III is on research practices. We ask: How can practices be shared? What new formats might be required? What happens when different practices are brought into relation? Contributions take the form of Practice Sharings and Glimpses. Practice Sharings offer experiential encounters with a practice through participatory, performative, exploratory, or speculative formats. Glimpses are short presentations that offer insight into a practice. Convocation III is hosted by the Society of Artistic Research Special Interest Group for Language-based Artistic Research (LBAR/SIG) and builds upon conversations initiated through Convocation I at the Research Pavilion, Venice, in 2019 and Convocation II, Vienna, 2023.
