Beschreibung
This seminar investigates the building envelope as a dynamic system: skin, shell, membrane, screen and boundary. Students examine its thermal, structural and ecological functions, with particular attention to its dual role as an ornate boundary and interstitial environment. Relating to ongoing research at the department, the semester theme emphasises the dialectics of decay and decoration: material transformation over time through weathering, particularly by water. Rather than resisting such change, students explore how it can inform design, shape construction strategies and generate new aesthetic outcomes. Through case studies and research-led investigation, students analyse, critique and design envelopes that mediate between interior and exterior, attending to non-human agents, interface design, precise documentation and constructible solutions. Hands-on projects develop critical thinking about the lifecycle of envelopes and support application in design studio work.
