Beschreibung

Color is a fundamental aspect of artworks and results from the interaction between light, matter, and human perception. This course introduces the basic principles of color theory and color chemistry, including light and optics, visual perception, color concepts and measurement, and the optical and material properties of paint.

A particular focus is placed on artists’ pigments. Students are introduced to their history, classification, chemical identity, and properties. Selected examples illustrate how chemical composition relates to color, stability, compatibility, and characteristic degradation phenomena.

The course provides a fundamental scientific basis for understanding color and colored materials in the context of art, conservation, and restoration.

Prüfungsmodalitäten

After completing the course, students’ knowledge will be assessed through an oral or written examination based on a provided set of examination questions.

Anmerkungen

The lectures will take place in the lecture hall at Salzgries 14, 1st floor, and will be held in English.
