Description
The seminar *Listening | Sounding | Research* offers students the opportunity to explore how an acoustic, listening-centred artistic approach to the world can give rise to diverse forms of artistic expression and social experiences.
Adopting a context-based approach, we will examine field recordings, oral history, the ethics and possibilities of recording techniques, visual scores and interview formats, as well as the material and spatial properties of sound, the political dimension of listening and the phenomenon of the human voice. The focus will be, in particular, on issues relating to the visual arts, sound art, performance and sound studies.
In the winter semester 2026/27, three exhibitions at the Secession will serve as the starting point for our exploration:

• Lap-See Lam
• Bernhard Leitner
In addition, the seminar will examine selected examples from art and sound art to discuss the possibilities and limitations of the concept of artistic research. This process will be accompanied by an introduction to microphone placement and audio editing, listening exercises, and experimental approaches to developing students’ own sound-based works.

Art in Context I is a module in the GO phase that explores artistic practice in relation to our world and human existence. The module is designed as a brief introduction to two artistic fields (photography/performance, or sound/storytelling), accompanied by an examination of the context of each field. Context in art encompasses a wide range of elements, including material conditions, the historical period, the background of the artistic media and the artists themselves, the prevailing cultural and social norms, and the technological possibilities of the time. Each of these factors plays a decisive role in the design, production and interpretation/reception of art. Art in Context I is only offered in the winter semester.
