The introductory seminar Storytelling explores storytelling as an artistic practice that moves beyond linear narratives and heroic protagonists. Instead, it focuses on fragments, rumours, diaries, self-portraits, moving images, and collective forms of narration.

Together, we will investigate how stories circulate through communities, images, bodies, and everyday encounters, shaping the ways we remember, imagine, and relate to one another. Drawing on Ursula K. Le Guin's The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction, we will approach storytelling as a practice of gathering rather than conquering, considering how everyday encounters, conversations, memories, and acts of collecting can become forms of artistic knowledge rather than material waiting to be shaped into a single narrative.

The seminar combines readings, discussions, screenings, and practical exercises in writing. Over the course of the semester, each student will contribute entries to a collectively authored glossary. Bringing together words, images, memories, references, and artistic responses that emerge through our shared research, the glossary will become a living archive of the concepts and stories developed throughout the course.

Regular attendance and active participation

Art in Context I is a course in the GO phase that relates artistic practice to our world and human existence. The course is structured as a brief introduction to two artistic fields each time (Photography/Performance, or Sound/Storytelling), accompanied by an examination of the context of each field. Context in art encompasses a range of elements, including material conditions, the historical period, the background of the artistic media and artists themselves, prevailing cultural and social norms, and the technological possibilities of the time. Each of these factors plays a decisive role in shaping the production and interpretation/reception of art. Art in Context I is offered only in the winter semester.
