At a time when research, academic teaching and artistic production are increasingly guided by decolonial and intersectional discourses, there is an urgent need not only to engage with this process as an intellectual endeavour, but also to promote a transformation through concrete symbolic and material steps and measures.

Methodologically, we recommend drawing inspiration from Spellbreak Training* for new artistic works. This involves using art as a spell-breaking strategy and creating a challenging space in which we break the spell of a dominant, normative way of life and worldview.

In order to counter a Eurocentric, racist and anthropocentric spell through art-based practices, it is therefore necessary not only to question hegemonic history and canons, but also to experiment with new forms of collective action and mutual responsibility.

 

In this seminar, we will explore a number of significant approaches that seek to break this so-called ‘spell’ through anti-racist and decolonial perspectives on art and its mediation, by questioning the aims, interests, methods, working processes and ethics of art itself – both within and outside the institutional sphere.
