The seminar explores fundamental practices of translation within processes of perception.

Drawing on Gansterer’s current research project Contingent Agencies – Investigating the Emergence of Atmospheres, methods and experimental approaches to artistic research will be introduced and explored in both theory and practice. In the spirit of research-led and practice-oriented teaching, a central part of the seminar will take place during a multi-day excursion (Pentecost 2027).

Through walking and moving together across diverse sites and landscapes, we will observe the fundamental interactions of perception between the so-called “outer world and inner world”. We will develop specific forms of re-cording (notation) situations and their respective atmospheres through artistic field research.

Through reciprocal transitions from idea to sign, from word to image, from trace to figure, and from material to action, tactics of re-cording and in-scribing the spatial and the corporeal will be explored and experienced individually as well as collectively.

How can the specificity of a place and its fleeting atmosphere be recorded? How do I re-act to it? How can the collected “data”, subjective experiences and re-cordings be further processed, given form, and thereby made communicable to others?

The aim is to develop an increased sensitivity towards the qualitative characteristics of being-in-motion within the landscape; to explore places “seismographically” while tracing one’s own “choreographies of sense-making”; and to investigate and performatively expand notions of form and material.

Regular attendance, a short impulse presentation, and the development of an independent artistic work

Artistic Project Work (2 contact hours per week) in combination with Practices (2 contact hours per week)

Following several preparatory meetings, the seminar will take place in a block format during a multi-day excursion over Pentecost 2027 (maximum 10 participants). Further preparatory meetings and individual consultations will be arranged as needed.

The course is also part of the APL (Angewandte Performance Laboratory).
