Haptic Books for Children and Young People with Visual Impairments

How can stories be told through touch?

This seminar is a collaboration between the Department of Textiles and the Institute of Language Arts. It explores how stories can be conceived and experienced through touch, with the aim of developing tactile, textile books for children.

In the winter semester, the focus is on exploring haptic perception and the possibilities of storytelling through material. Through material experiments, practical exercises, reading, and research, we investigate how we perceive through touch, how meaning can be conveyed, and how stories can emerge through material experience. At the same time, we engage with different forms of children’s literature and consider how language, material, and tactile experience can interact to open up new forms of storytelling.

In the summer semester, these experiences are brought together in the development and production of a tactile book for a specific child. A central part of the seminar is the collaboration with children and young people at the Federal Institute for the Blind in Vienna: their wishes, ideas, and experiences form a starting point for our work. Working in small groups, participants develop and produce books that bring together language, material, and touch while experimenting with new forms of storytelling.

Examination Modalities

Active participation (minimum 75% attendance); development of a concept for a tactile book in the winter semester; realization of the book project in the summer semester; presentation of the work; submission of a short digital documentation.
