Needlework (Tattoo × Textile)

Guest workshop with Emmanuel Uchenna Item

The needle is central to both tattooing and textile practices: it pierces a surface and leaves a trace. In this workshop with tattoo artist Emmanuel Item, students gain practical insights into his artistic practice and are introduced to the basic processes of tattooing—from developing a design to working with specific tools and materials. Through hands-on exercises and material experiments, they explore tattooing as a technique and artistic practice. Building on these experiments, students develop a small artistic work that explores connections between tattooing and textile practices.

Emmanuel Uchenna Item is a tattoo artist who reinterprets West African art and culture through contemporary tattooing. His work preserves African heritage by transforming traditional symbolism into wearable art that bridges history and identity. With precise linework and bold compositions, he blends abstract symbolism with modern aesthetics. He lives and works in Vienna, where he runs his own tattoo studio.
