Description

Cinema is a defining media of the 20th century, and even in the 21st century, it has lost none of its significance or influence—on the contrary, even as keeps changing and transforms, for instance into mobile screens, as described by the term “post-cinema".  The mere fact that we are all surrounded by audiovisual moving images and communicate through them makes a critical engagement with films indeed an urgency. Furthermore, (post-)cinema is linked to the promise of liberation and change and has forged close ties with political movements such as feminism, anti-racism, anti-colonial liberation, class struggles, and protests against climate change. Films also mean making something else imaginable, its creates spaces of possibility. This seminar is dedicated to the question of how we talk about films and attempts to engage in an “audiovisual moving image education”: What do we see when we watch a film? How do we relate our viewing experience to that of others? How do we discuss about and with films? What forms of talking about films exist, which ones can we come up with?
