Description

This seminar examines queer and trans writing in recent decades. In doing so, it doesn't take these labels personally. Rather than as an identity marker or as a overgeneralized word for "somehow transgressive," it uses queer and trans to explore specific, historical poetic approaches, scenes like New Narrative, trans literature or the poetry scene around the Nighboat publishing house. Central to this exploration is the hypothesis that these genres develop a certain sensorium of the impersonal, an archive of unfeeling. They unimagine what it means to live gendered under capitalism. We read writers like Samuel R. Delany, Robert Glück, Renee Gladman, or P. Staff, accompanied by theory by Leo Bersani, Lauren Berlant, Sianne Ngai or Amy De'ath. A more extensive seminar description will follow.
