Beschreibung

"Tuesday I became clouds. Possibly a defensive measure. Everyone likes clouds. They lift the heart, they lift the eye. Actually they lift the heart because they lift the eye. Cognitive scientists say that people place gods in the high blue sky because looking up causes a rush of dopamine in the brain. Yet clouds do more than draw your eye upwards. They invent your imagination." (Anne Carson)

In this course, we shift our gaze to images of clouds. In what Luke Howard described as a potentially ‘useless pursuit of shadows’, we consider images of clouds as objects that cross the boundaries between artistic and scientific image making.

Our focus will be on the precise reproduction of a work of art depicting clouds.

We will engage with the making of an art work in a practical way, but also examine the constraints and processes before and during its creation, which likewise can shape the final result and are all too often taken for granted.

Through various ethnographic exercises and methods for recording our observations and thoughts, we will lay the foundations for a discussion on how making and research influence one another. Moreover, how they are inseparably linked.

We will explore the potential of reproduction – as well as various other concepts such as appropriation, copying and reworking – as an artistic strategy in cross-disciplinary practices.

This course forms part of an ongoing doctoral thesis on artistic and scientific image production. Participation in this research project is possible but not compulsory.

More information on the research behind the course as well as the list of art works and reading list, etc. will be shared at the first meeting.
